The City of Saskatoon says the municipal property tax with a 3.7 per cent increase next year is the lowest rise in 10 years. The increase for 2021 is 3.87 per cent. Mayor Charlie Clark thanked the federal government during deliberations for a one-time doubling of the Federal Gas Tax. The City received $14-million for use in 2019-20.
Some of the budget is going to the Saskatoon Police Service for 15 full time equivalent positions. Of 10 new officer positions, 8 will be for supervising the afe drug consumption site with response mainly to Pleasant Hill and Riversdale.
City Council approved $120-thousand for the Fire Department to hire 1-and-a-half temporary full time equivalent positions to work on a backlog of property maintenance and nuisance complaints. $3-million was approved to fund capital projects next year, including the replacement of an aerial ladder truck and fire engine, other equipment and small vehicle replacement.
