Canada’s Premiers gather in Toronto for two days of talks starting on Sunday. The meeting of the Council of the Federation will be chaired by our Premier Scott Moe. It is expected that the group will consider the state of federal-provincial-territorial relations. Moe says that, as Premier of Saskatchewan, he will be entering the meeting with a focus on taking concrete steps to address the frustration of Saskatchewan people. Moe believes there are three areas where consensus can be achieved:
Proposing amendments to fiscal stabilization;
Recognizing that each province is uniquely suited to tackle climate change, and that it is within the provincial jurisdiction of provinces to develop environmental policies to do so; and
Recognizing that each province has concerns with federal environmental assessment legislation that must be addressed through legislative amendments and regulations.
Moe says, in his recent meeting with the Prime Minister, Trudeau indicated a willingness to respect areas where premiers achieve a consensus.
