The schools and the newer neighbourhoods are growing quicker than anticipated, meaning Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools is requesting funding in the next budget for 18 new modular classrooms and 10 of those would be for the P3 builds.
Chief Financial Officer, Joel Lloyd, explains that the schools were constructed 2 years ago and the size was determined by anticipated growth and student need.
He adds there has always been a schedule to add modular classrooms as the neighbourhood built out and the population grew, but it happened sooner than expected.
Some of the schools are using non-classroom space for classes, so these modulars will get the students back into a classroom.
The P3 build schools that are receiving additional classrooms are Ecole Holy Mary, Holy Trinity, St. Kateri Tekakwitha, and St. Lorenzo Ruiz Catholic Schools.
At a recent Board of Education meeting, Lloyd reported a cash and non-cash deficit at the end of the fiscal year of just over $2.3-million. He explains that if you take out the non-cash items like amortization of their buildings, they actually had a surplus of $18-thousand-792.
