Even tough a minority government is now in power, many political strategists feel another election won’t be called for another two years or so.
Liberal Strategist, Jamie Miley says all of the parties are still feeling the financial impact of this year’s campaign and aren’t in a position to do anything in a hurry. Miley also points to the fact that the Conservatives aren’t in an ideal position at the moment for another election campaign given the on-going calls for Leader Andrew Scheer to resign.
NDP Strategist, Chris Ball says quote “I think we’re in sort of Stephen Harper minority territory.”
There were two minority governments under Harper, one from 2006 to 2008 and the second from 2008 to 2011. He also says the Bloc Party is currently in a comfortable position with a large caucus and isn’t in a rush for another campaign run.
Conservative Strategist, Rick Anderson says the Liberals will want to encroach on Conservative support in parliament by doing “Conservative friendly” things to try and appeal to Conservative voters and bring them back.
Second of all, Anderson says the Liberals will work to try and keep the Bloc Party happy and their third priority will likely be avoiding getting caught up in the NDP’s big ideas such as 100 per cent federally funded pharmacare.
On a western Canada persepctive, Liberal Strategist, Jamie Miley says with Jonathan Wilkinson, who grew up in Saskatoon, being appointed to Environment Minister is good news specifically for the Saskatoon area.
He adds if the Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion project is completed, he believes that it will take some of the steam out of some of things that are happening in western Canada at the federal level.
The strategists presented at a Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce and NSBA luncheon on Thursday.
