Saskatoon Police Staff Sergeant Tonya Gresty says to avoid having the very unpleasant experience of being robbery prior to Christmas, make sure all your personal belongings as well as any parcels or packages you are acquiring along the way in your shopping excursions tucked away into your trunk and at minimum – out of sight.
She says in terms of your personal safety, keep your head up and make eye contact but when it comes to keeping your home secure, in the event you’re going to be away, Staff Sergeant Gresty suggests you take a walk around your home as if its the first time you have seen it. You need to determine if your yard is well-lit, do you have lights on timers, you want to make sure your yard and exterior of your home, front and back – if you have alley access – look maintained. That can be everything from shoveling to making sure your mail is taken in.
And if you’ve been doing some on-line shopping, you might want to download an app to track where the package is at or arrange to have a delivery where it is guaranteed someone is there to receive the package. She says they have seen an increase in the thefts of packages from steps and porches.
