The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission has approved the transfer of monitoring responsibility for 19 sites from a decommissioned mine and mill in Northern Saskatchewan to the province.
The Commission has overseen the clean-up of the Beaverlodge Lodge uranium operation near Uranium City since it was shut down in 1982.
Cameco asked for the transfer of 20 properties feeling it has lived up to the criteria set out by regulators.
The commission has ruled one property doesn’t need further monitoring while the other 19 will now fall under the province’s jurisdiction.
Commissioners endorsed the move feeling those properties will remain safe under Saskatchewan’s Institutional Control Program.
Eldorado Nuclear Limited, a federal Crown corporation ran the operation for 30 years until it closed in 1982.
