The 70th inductee to the new Canada West Conference Hall-of-Fame is the U of S Huskiettes volleyball team from 1979 through 1981.
That squad won three consecutive C-I-A-U national championships, the first team to accomplish the feat. Of course, the Saskatchewan women won the Canada West Conference title in each of those three seasons, the first of only three teams to do that. In all, 100 athletes, builders, pioneers and teams are being inducted into the first class of the Canada West Conference Hall-of-Fame. Following is the official news release from the Canada West Hall-of-Fame…
Saskatchewan set bar for women’s volleyball dynasties
Huskiettes won three consecutive CIAU titles from 1979-81
Saskatchewan won three consecutive CIAU women’s volleyball titles from 1979 to 1981, a feat that no team had previously achieved. The U of S also won the Canada West championship each year from 1979 through 1981, becoming first of only three teams to win both the Canada West and national title in three straight seasons.
The dynasty team was inducted Monday into the Canada West Hall of Fame, as the conference continued its celebration of 100 years of university sport in Western Canada.
With venerated coach Mark Tennant at the helm, the Huskiettes dynasty began during the 1978-79 season, as the team dominated competition from coast-to-coast. Saskatchewan defeated York, Ottawa, and Manitoba for national gold during the squad’s run of excellence at the CIAU tournament.
All three Saskatchewan women’s volleyball championship teams have previously been enshrined in the University of Saskatchewan Hall of Fame, Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame, and Saskatoon Sports Hall of Fame.
