The President of Canadians for Affordable Energy isn’t predicting any big hikes in gas prices in the next few months, although Dan McTeague says there could be unforeseen circumstances like a political situation or a refinery breakdown. Otherwise, gas prices were relatively stable for much of 2019 and he expects the same for the next few months.
There are only 2 certainties for change and both of them are in April. On the 1st, the federal government will add a 2.4 cent carbon tax increase, including GST, and then on the 15th, Canada moves from winter to summer blends of gasoline which is another 4 to 5 cents a litre.
It costs gas stations about $1.01 to buy their gas, McTeague explains, taking into consideration the wholesale price, the federal and provincial taxes and GST and the carbon tax. That means when gas stations are selling for around $1.03 a litre, they are taking a beating when you consider their expenses which include the cost of the facility, staffing, and paying for credit card service.
Right now in Saskatoon, the price is around $1.05.9 and in Regina it’s about a cent higher.
