The City of Saskatoon has taken another step towards reaching its goal of 70 per cent waste diversion.
The City’s environment committee voted in favour of moving forward with a plan to have those in the industrial, commercial and institutional sector, three separate and labelled bins for recycling, organics and waste.
The matter has yet to be approved by City Council, and if approved later this month, the changes are expected to come into effect starting in the second half of 2021 for recycling and the second half of 2022 for organics.
Amber Weckworth, the City’s Manager of Education and Environmental Performance says one of their next steps will be seeing how the City current waste services can be offered to the ICI sector.
“Even looking at some smaller businesses and seeing if they can just sign-up for blue or green carts.” said Weckworth during Monday’s committee meeting.
The City says the phased-in approach would give the sector time to prepare and to allow waste companies time to prepare for the changes.
The City adds the plan would increase the waste diversion rate 22 to 27 per cent. The goal from the City of Saskatoon when it comes to waste diversion is 70 per cent.
