It’s been a record-breaking week for natural gas consumption in Saskatchewan.
SaskEnergy says the record of 1.5 petajoules set in December 2018 was broken not once, not twice but three times this week.
Casey MacLeod with SaskEnergy says from Monday morning to Tuesday morning, 1.53 petajoules were used, then from 9 a.m. Tuesday to 9 a.m. Wednesday, the record was broken with 1.54 petajoules.
Then that record was surpassed this morning (thurs) when the 24 hour numbers were calculated with 1.56 petajoules used.
MacLeod says the amount of power used by the average residential customer doesn’t change but the size of the population continues to grow.
“But we continue to add new customers every year to the system so as our system grows, it’s inevitable during cold snaps we’re going to continue to set new records.”
MacLeod says they wouldn’t be surprised to see similar numbers over the next 24 hours.
