The Saskatoon Fire Department warns extreme cold and heavy snowfalls can be dangerous.
Officials say furnaces, water heaters, chimneys, as well as dryer vents and pipes should be checked after every significant snowfall or extreme cold snap for snow or ice buildup.
Obstructed vents and pipes could result in carbon monoxide seeping back inside the home.
They also say never use ovens for home heating and keep all heat sources free of dust, lint and chemicals.
And anyone who drives away without unplugging their block heaters should check the device, extension cords and outlets and replace anything damaged before plugging the car in again.
Fire officials also suggest house numbers get cleared off so emergency officials can see them if need be.
