What has become an annual January event in Saskatoon is catching on in other cities. The 5th annual Winterruption begins tonight (Wed) with live entertainment at venues around town.
The festival is organized and found by the Broadway Theatre. Executive Director Kirby Wirchenko says Regina also puts on Winterruption at the same time, and this year Swift Current, Edmonton and Winnipeg are joining in, with Calgary possibly joining in next year.
There are indoor and outdoor activities during the 5 day event. The indoor entertainment includes stand-up comedy, live music, a comedy about depression, and National Geographic Live at TCU Place tomorrow night presenting “On The Trail Of Big Cats”.
The outdoor entertainment runs Friday night and Saturday in the park behind Ecole Victoria School on Broadway Avenue. The outdoor events are free and include sleigh rides, a light display inspired by the Aurora Borealis on Saturday night, giant jenga, outdoor ping pong, art installations and a DJ.
Wirchenko says there are many chances to get out in December, but not much is going on in January so Winterruption is the opportunity to get out and celebrate Saskatoon as a winter city.
