He skates 19-hours 26-minutes at a time in tribute of his late mother who died from Alzheimers.
Steve McNeil will take his cross-Canada fund raising effort to Saskatoon later today (Wed).
The recreational hockey referee from Toronto did his first skate at city hall on Christmas Day 2013 in recognition of his mother who was born in 1926. She died the next year.
McNeil says family members convinced him to take the idea to the next level.
The 58-year-old skated in all seven NHL cities last year raising 47-thousand dollars and decided to add the Maritimes and Saskatoon this year to make it a national event.
McNeil has endured driving rain, blizzards and severe cold over the years but says the most inclement weather he has ever skated through came last weekend in Calgary.
He says the cold air and wind froze anything that was exposed within minutes but there was a pleasant surprise in cow-town last year.
The son of former ACDC band member Chris Slade heard about his campaign and visited the rink. Malcomb Young who is another former band member passed away from Alzheimers in 2017.
The next morning McNeil who is a big ACDC fan received a donation of $19,260 from the band.
McNeil is asking for donations of $19.26 in honour of his mother’s birth year to his website
www.1926Skate.com and says all local donations will go to the Alzheimers Society of Saskatchewan.
The Saskatoon skate will start at 5 p.m.
McNeil encourages everyone to join him on the Cameco Meewasin Skating Rink at Nutrien Park.
