The United States is the greatest democracy in the world, just ask them. But if you ask The Economist, that title goes to Norway. The Economist Intelligence Unit’s Democracy Index ranked 167 countries based on 60 indicators. Iceland ranks 2nd and Sweden pulls in next to mark the top three. Canada shows up on the list at number eight so, in the top ten. And the United States? That country doesn’t make the grade until position number 25; behind such countries as South Korea, Chile and Uruguay.
The Economist says democracy is in retreat. It says democracy has been eroded around the world in the past year. The Economist says only 44 countries can be deemed full democracies.
