It’s a play that is sure to get people talking, or at least that’s the hope.
The live documentary style play Reasonable Doubt to be presented at Persephone Theatre examines Indigenous and non-Indigenous relations following the death of Colten Boushie at a farm near Biggar in 2016.
Co-author Joel Bernbaum says he actually started doing interviews before Boushie’s death and found that everyone was polite with their replies as if they were speaking words they thought they had to say, and then when Boushie was shot and killed people spoke from their hearts with raw honesty.
The verbatim script is constructed from over 200 interviews, from transcripts of the Gerald Stanley trial.
Bernbaum says all views are presented in this play, and following each performance there will be a facilitated conversation.
Art can be entertaining and engaging at the same time, and he considers this a chance for art to present the opportunity to move the conversation forward.
Preview nights begin Wednesday and opening night is Friday.
Reasonable Doubt runs through February 12th.
