The University of Saskatchewan is taking a slightly different approach than the University of Regina when it comes to the coronavirus and any trips to China.
USask Chief Communications Officer Gord Hunchak says they have partnerships throughout China and are trying to get a full picture of how the virus may affect current and planned activities. Staff and students are being advised to follow the federal government’s travel advisories. The university is monitoring the situation along with the City of Saskatoon and the Saskatchewan Health Authority and there is an emergency management plan in place if needed.
On Monday, the University of Regina announced all of its official university business trips to China for the next 3 months have been cancelled and any other trips by students, staff, researchers or faculty would need Dean’s approval.
There are two cases of coronavirus in Ontario, one is confirmed and the other is presumed, and now there is one presumptive case of coronavirus in BC. That province’s health officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry, says the man lives in the area covered by Vancouver Coastal Health and he is doing well.
She also says the man voluntarily isolated himself when he returned to Canada last week and was not presenting any symptoms on the flight.
A news release from Vancouver Coastal Health says risk of the spread of the virus in B.C. remains low. A team at the BC Centre for Disease Control has developed a diagnostic test for the coronavirus and is coordinating staff and supplies to ensure potential cases can be detected quickly and accurately.
