In response to the Premier suggesting police will take action if the blockades aren’t taken down, the Regina Police Service has released a statement. It says the RPS is responsible for community safety and at this time, the City is not in jeopardy and steps have been taken to ensure emergency vehicle access at the Co-op Refinery Complex. The statement also says police must be independent of elected officials.
The Regina Police Service is concerned about the ongoing illegal actions and the violation of the court order by members of Unifor Local 594 and Unifor National, and these matters remain the subject of ongoing investigation. As long as there are civil remedies, the RPS feels these must be fully explored first. The statement says the Contempt of Court application on Thursday is the appropriate way to end the blockade.
Resolving the situation peacefully without having to use force is always the primary goal for the police service.
