The call for the Moe government to remove the six percent PST on construction or at least make cities and towns exempt from paying it is being made again by the Saskatchewan NDP.
Party Leader, Ryan Meili, speaking at the SUMA convention in Regina, says it should be scrapped because it’s hurting the construction industry and municipalities because of the added cost.
He explains it impedes municipalities from being able to invest in key infrastructure, and there is a lot of aging infrastructure out there.
SUMA president Gordon Barnhart is hopeful that now that the province’s budget is balanced, it will remove the tax altogether.
Meili also touched on the provincial bus line.
He says there may not have been a lot of ridership in its last few years, but many residents are still upset the government shut the STC down.
He says it has stranded lots of seniors and some have had to make the decision to move from their hometowns to larger centres to be closer to appointments.
He says if elected later this year, the NDP would bring back a form of STC.
