Trafficking in wildlife cost a Gronlid man more than $36 thousand. The Ministry of Environment says 64 year old Randall Wehrkamp pleaded guilty in Melfort Provincial Court to several charges including Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking, Trafficking, and Unlawful Possession of Wildlife. The investigation began in 2014 when conservation officers were told that someone was buying and selling large numbers of wild elk, moose, and deer antlers without the proper permits. The Environment Department says that during the investigation, antlers were purchased by a suspect from undercover officers on numerous occasions. In November of 2018, a search warrant was executed on a property near Gronlid. 314 antlers, 19 complete sets of antlers, and horns from elk, moose, deer, and five African species were seized. Several firearms were also seized. Wehrkamp has paid off his fines and is facing a five-year hunting suspension and 12 months of probation. He was also ordered to make a $200 donation to Ducks Unlimited.
