In recent history in Saskatchewan, 225-thousand litres of diluted heavy oil spilled into the North Saskatchewan River near Maidstone in 2016, then last December, an estimated 1.5-million litres leaked in the first Guernsey area Canadian Pacific train derailment, and now Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Environment is estimating the spill last week would be around 1.2-million litres. That’s an estimated 2.7-million litres of oil spilled in about a 2 month period. Clean up efforts are under way and it’s expected to take months.
