The province says that its monitoring program detected no invasive mussels in 123 waterbodies in the province last year. Environment Minister Dustin Duncan attributes that to public awareness and education, along with roadside watercraft inspections, decontamination, and regular monitoring. Last year, the ministry checked more than 31 hundred watercraft, identifying 147 as high-risk and requiring further inspection, with 217 watercraft going through decontamination. Anyone bringing watercraft into the province must stop for an inspection, or risk a $500 fine. It’s also illegal to bring prohibited aquatic species into the province.
