Canadian National Railway says it will be forced to shut down significant parts of its Canadian network if the blockades on its rail lines aren’t removed.
The blockade near Belleville, Ontario is on CN’s only eastern link between Western and Eastern Canada, and between Eastern Canada and the U.S. Mid-West.
There is also a blockade in B.C. between Prince George and Prince Rupert.
CN says at either location, there are no trains moving, whether passenger or freight trains.
Hundreds of trains have been cancelled since the blockades began last Friday.
President and CEO JJ Ruest, says the impact is harming the country’s reputation as a stable and viable supply chain partner.
He says the protesters are in solidarity with the pipeline opposition movement and are unrelated to CN’s activities. See our story in the Agriculture section on how the protests are impacting grain movement.
