Driving home Thursday afternoon proved to be difficult for some Saskatoon motorists.
A protest to show solidarity for the Wet’suwet’en First Nation near Houston, BC. took place at the intersection of 22nd Street and Idylwyld Drive around 4:30 Thursday.
Around 300 protestors and environmentalists took to one of the city’s busiest intersections disrupting traffic during the rush hour.
Protests have been taking place across Canada recently with people standing up against a pipeline project that would cross land belonging to the northern B.C. First Nation.
Many including environmentalist Jan Norris were among the 300 protestors in downtown Saskatoon. She says she’s tired of her tax dollars going to support the fossil fuel industry by building pipelines.
Norris adds there needs to be a big change in the world by getting off fossil fuels and investing more into solar energy.
The group of protestors blocked off the intersection for just over half and hour before making their way up Idylwyld Drive and through other downtown streets including 2nd Avenue.
Via Rail has cancelled all passenger train service across Canada until further notice Thursday afternoon due to the on-going protests on rail lines in Ontario.
Regina also held a similar protest last weekend.
A number of Saskatoon Police officers were also on hand helping re-direct traffic during Thursday’s drive home.
