An extra step has been added to the process of a name change in Saskatchewan.
The provincial government says that residents 18 years of age and older will need to provide a criminal record check if they want to change their name.
Attorney General Don Morgan says there are 22 offences for which a person could have their request denied.
Morgan explained that the goal of this was not to be punitive, which is why they decided to not spread it out across other offences.
Offenses associated with the rule are ones that require registration in the National Sex Offender Registry.
