Exactly one week after the NDP called on the province to release two reports into financial and government irregularities in the Northern Village of Pinehouse, the government announced releasing the formal inquiry report and related findings. The NDP said the issue goes back to July 2016 when 34 citizens wrote the province asking for help in fixing the Local Authority Freedom of Information Act, so that issues could be made public. In the end, the final report does not recommend the removal from office of any members of council. Government Relations Minister Lori Carr says the government accepts this recommendation. Former Justice William Vancise worked with a team of people to investigate Pinehouse. He notes in his report that there were instances where the council was not meeting their legislative responsibilities in the areas of access to information requests and some municipal operations, but he determined this was not a result of a deliberate disregard for the law. He also noted that the village has taken steps to resolve these issues. Carr says she is ordering officials to arrange for temporary administration support-staff to provide hands-on assistance to the local council. They will remain there for up to six months and are part of a series of actions the community must carry out to help ensure it is meeting its obligations under related legislation.
