Before returning to the Saskatchewan Legislature for the spring session next month, Opposition NDP Leader Ryan Meili was in Yorkton Thursday to hear what residents want addressed by the provincial government.
Meili says poverty in the Yorkton area was one of the issues raised. he says a housing problem is leading to homelessness in Yorkton. And he says , there was a connection between the elimination of STC, the provincial bus company , and the difficultly people are experiencing in getting to communities with supports for housing.
Meili also met with Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations members at an assembly in Yorkton, and heard their concerns. He says he could sense their frustration during the meeting. Meili says for years, they have had to deal with the Sask Party government that has not engaged with them in any meaningful way. He says he is ready to actually partner with the FSIN and work to make things better.
Meili says he heard calls for the government to follow up on what is happening with Morris Industries.
Morris was granted creditor protection in January due to its ambitious growth strategy failing, and not enough money to pay its debts and continue operations.
Meili says we haven’t heard enough yet from the provincial government about what, exactly, is going on.
