Premier Scott Moe wants Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to “cancel his unconstitutional carbon tax”.
That was his message to the PM when speaking with reporters in Saskatoon Monday afternoon after the Alberta Court of Appeal voted 4-1 ruling that the federal carbon tax is unconstitutional.
Premier Moe is confident that the supreme court will side with the provinces fighting the tax next month.
“We will be successful at the supreme court. That is the target, that is the goal. We have been working towards that, refining our argument as we go along.”
He says the 4-1 decision in Alberta is significant because it’s the first decision in which both sides have refined their argument to the level where they feel they’re at their very best.
Two previous decisions in Saskatchewan and Ontario ruled the other way.
Moe says the Alberta court found that the imposition of the federal carbon tax represents a wholesale take over of a collection of clear provincial jurisdictions and rights and called it a “constitutional trojan horse” that ultimately could allow Ottawa to exert authority over other areas.
The dates for Saskatchewan’s case in the supreme court is March 24th while Ontario’s is March 25th.
