Discussions between the Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs and the BC RCMP have led to an agreement, which supports the Chiefs’ meetings with federal and provincial government representatives today (Thurs) and tomorrow.
The RCMP say their discussions were focused on the need to ensure the Morice West Forest Service Road remains open, and to ensure police presence in the territory.
The agreement is that police won’t patrol the road unless there is an emergency call for service.
The RCMP also closed its outpost on the First Nations territory last Friday.
TC Energy has agreed to stop work along the service road while the Chiefs have discussions with the the government representatives.
Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Carolyn Bennett and B.C. Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation, Scott Fraser, will meet with the hereditary Chiefs for what are being called preliminary discussions.
