The University of Saskatchewan’s College of Medicine has earned strong reviews from the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools, earning the satisfaction of the accrediting body across all 93 areas reviewed. The college achieved full accreditation after a on site review in 2017, but needed to send in written reports to follow up with additional data that wasn’t available at the time. After submitting the reports the college received successful results from the CACMS this week. With the results the college will not require another onsite visit until the year 2025 or 2026.
Dean of the college Dr. Preston Smith spoke on the results, saying he believes the medical school is now among the strongest of any medical doctor program in the country in terms of the accreditation outcome. He explained that the latest result speaks to the commitment of the faculty, staff and students, with critical support from the university, health system and government partners, who he says rallied together through significant change to create a strong program.
Smith called the results a significant turnaround for the college, that saw over the past few decades the need to work through accreditation challenges that brought a significant overhaul to the program that was meant to permanently address ongoing issues at the time.
The college has been following a plan, called “The Way Forward” which was developed in 2013.
