Norm Kirby, a veteran of World War II and a veteran of the Liberation of the Netherlands, he says he was quite surprised that he was chosen for a poster unveiled Thursday launching the 75th Anniversary of Victory in Europe Day.
Norm Kirby enlisted as an underage recruit at 17 years old. He stormed Juno beach on June 6th, 1944 and when he came home from the war he was still too young to vote or have a beer with his father.
The retired Sergeant says after all of the horrors he had gone through from Normandy, Belgium, the Battle of the Scheldt, and Holland, he says one of the highlights was in Groningen, Netherlands. He said they had just liberated part of the community and all these little kids came pouring out.
Mr. Kirby described the children as laughing and smiling, wearing the colours of the Netherlands which had been secreted away for the 5 years of the Occupation. He said he knew then what the war had been all about. Norm Kirby is going back to the Netherlands this year.
