While it might be automatic for some people to wear their seat-belts, statistics from SGI show that between 2009 to 2018, there was an average of 34 deaths and 231 injuries from improper or non-seat-belt use in Saskatchewan.
Seat-belts and child seats are March’s traffic safety spotlight for SGI. In 2019, police reported an average of more than 500 tickets every month after finding people were not properly restrained in seat-belts or car seats. Acting corporal Adele Breen serves on the RCMP F Division Forensic Collision Reconstruction Program. Breen says that about 90 per cent of the car seats they check are not installed properly, however some are small corrections that can be easily fixed. SGI says drivers are responsible to make sure all passengers under 16-years-old is wearing their seatbelt or correctly restrained, otherwise it could mean a $175 ticket plus 3 demerit points.
