The provincial government says oil and gas companies in the province have responsibly completed a record number of oil and gas well abandonments in 2019 and into 2020. Over two thousand were completed between April 1st, last year and February 29th. The government says that’s an increase of 40 per cent compared to the previous year. Abandoned wells have to be decommissioned to a safe and environmentally sound condition including plugging the downhole producing zones, cutting off well casings below the surface, and sealing it with a welded cap. Energy and Resources Minister Bronwyn Eyre says, “Saskatchewan’s oil and gas sector is one of the most environmentally responsible in the world.”
