Premier Scott Moe says the province is in good shape to deal with COVID-19 or any economic disruption in the markets. During Question Period, NDP Leader Ryan Meili suggested holding a snap spring election would be a bad idea, considering the financial markets and COVID-19. Scott Moe didn’t say whether there would be an early election, but replied that the government is well prepared to provide the health services should the novel coronavirus reach Saskatchewan, and they are well prepared to handle any financial challenges from the virus or from the falling market prices. The NDP says the collapse of oil prices could have a 300 million dollar hit on the budget but the SaskParty accuses the NDP of fear-mongering.
Also discussed at Question Period, the opposition urged the Moe government to resolve the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation contract dispute. NDP critic Carla Beck says the province has made a low offer and should bargain in good faith. Education minister Gordon Wyant says the teachers have walked away from the contract talks. He encourages the union to return to the bargaining table so the government can present the new bargaining mandate, which he believes represents a fair offer for teachers. Wyant says the province has also offered to have discussions on solving some of the classroom challenges. (CKRM)
