Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke for the third time at Rideau Cottage, since self isolating, on Tuesday with a message of social distancing and making choices to save lives.
Speaking in Ottawa, Trudeau says we must all work together and make choices that help the people around us which he believes will save lives.
A special cabinet committee on COVID-91 met Tuesday morning, with the goal of providing support for Canadians, while protecting jobs. Trudeau says his government will make an announcement Wednesday on economic actions. He says, by the end of the week, there will be more to say abut changes for the upcoming tax season.
Trudeau says his government is examining the Emergency Measures Act to see if it is necessary, or to see if there are other ways to take the actions needed to protect people. The last time the act was enforced was by Trudeau senior, Pierre Elliot Trudeau in 1970, to deal with the FLQ crisis in Quebec. Trudeau is calling for cooperation from all levels of government when it comes to Canada’s response to the COVID-19 outbreak.
The Prime Minister also spoke on a emergency loan program of $5,000 for travelers needing immediate assistance getting home, or to cover their needs if they stay out of country. This comes after the recent announcement of closing of air borders to most non-citizens.
As of Wednesday Trudeau announced Parks Canada is suspending visitor services at all national sites.
Trudeau is hoping to recall Parliament to deal with the pandemic. He say there are economic pieces that will need quick passage through the house.
