The City has pushed back the property tax deadline until the end of September. In addition, City Council has also decided to suspend utility disconnections until September 30th.
The measures were passed unanimously during an emergency council meeting Thursday afternoon.
City Manager, Jeff Jorgenson says Saskatoon Transit has introduced measures to prevent close contact between the driver and passengers.
As of Friday, passengers are now required to enter through the rear door and fares are not being charged.
Transit also reminds riders to keep a safe distance – at least one metre – from bus operators and fellow riders. Anyone who requires personal mobility devices is exempt from entering the rear doors and is permitted to enter and exit through the front doors.
Enforcement for parking on residential streets has also been suspended. That allows residents who are staying home to park on the street for as long as they need.
Parking will still be enforced in downtown and other business districts.
City Hall is currently closed to public, although a number of services can be accessed through the City’s website.
The following was posted on Facebook by Mayor Charlie Clark.
Today the City announced further changes to help slow the spread of COVID-19. These changes are meant to address some of the concerns arising as people adjust to self-isolation and physical distancing.
1. Transit is targeted to become free as of Friday. This is the result of a decision to move to a rear-door entry for the health and safety of operators (but those who require a ramp can still have access to ramp). There is no mechanism to collect fares from the rear door, so there will be no fares collected. Transit Service will be reduced starting on Monday, with more details to follow.
2. Enforcement of parking restrictions in residential parking permit areas will be halted. Additionally, the 72 hour parking rule in all residential areas will stop being enforced indefinitely. This is because people self-isolating will not be able to move vehicles with any frequency.
3. City Council approved the decision to defer penalties and late payment charges for utility bills and payment of property taxes until September 30. No utility connections will be cancelled during this time. This is meant to give residents some financial relief during this difficult period.
