Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the Canada Emergency Response Benefit will provide $2 thousand a month for the next 4 months for workers who lose their income as a result of the COVID-19 virus. He says this will replace the two benefits announced last week, in order to streamline the process. He says an application portal will open shortly, and people will start receiving money within 10 days of applying.
Trudeau says 13 thousand government workers from various agencies are being re-assigned to help get federal aid out.
He says the Canada Emergency Response Benefit should start making payments to applicants by April 6th.
The prime minister was asked how the government was going to handle Canadians returning from overseas who mask COVID-19 symptoms to dodge screening to get back into the country.
Trudeau says there are many concerns about passengers returning to Canada and he says thats why they are asking people to isolate as soon as they get home. He did not give a direct answer when asked what consequences Canadians who try and mask symptoms to get home would face on arrival if caught.
