BHP Is implementing what it calls a range of stringent measures at its Jansen Potash project site and at its offices in Saskatoon and Mississauga, to reduce the risk of COVID-19 contagion. That includes split shifts so fewer people are on site a the same time. At Jansen, changes have been made to transportation arrangements, how meetings are conducted, and camp life itself. The company is also reducing activity to focus on one shaft at a time with reduced crews. That reduces the number of contractors on site and the need for out-of-province workers on site.
At the same time, BHP says it has implemented an accelerated payment program to support First Nations, Metis and local community businesses and communities in Saskatchewan during the pandemic. This is expected to deliver about $3 million more quickly into the hands of small business partners. The company says it will also support the supply of hygiene products to local community stakeholders.
