The Canadian Union of Public Employees says the provincial government’s approach to childcare centres, amidst the COVID-19 situation, is causing widespread confusion for childcare providers. Judy Henley, president of CUPE Saskatchewan says there has been no clear direction from the government to the centres, the message they are delivering differs from centre to centre, and due to changes to the Saskatchewan Employment Act, workers are facing layoffs with no notice or compensation. CUPE is calling for immediate measures to protect workers and parents. Henley says parents need assurance that their childcare spot will be retained if they pull their children out without proper notice, because of health concerns. CUPE says other jurisdictions in Canada are leading the way in dealing with these issues.
