Jackie Christianson, Chair of CUPE Saskatchewan’s Education Workers Steering Committee says, “It puzzles me as to why some school divisions in our province insist on using their local autonomy to have their education support workers physically report to work during a pandemic.” The Canadian Union of Public Employees says support staff are being put at risk of contracting COVID-19. Christianson says some support staff are allowed to work from home, some have to report to their schools, and in some cases it’s at the discretion of the principal. Christianson wonders how much clearer the Prime Minister and the Premier have to be with the message of go home, stay home. The union wants the Minister of Education, Gord Wyant, to send a clear message to school divisions that it is irresponsible and reckless to have support workers report to work during a pandemic.
