There are now 11,268 of COVID-19 in Canada Friday morning with 138 deaths
Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer, Dr. Theresa Tam, says the number of infections and outbreaks being reported in high-risk settings is concerning. In particular, she says long-term care facilities are being affected in high numbers.
There are also reports of some hospitals with health care workers impacted. Tam says at least 50 deaths are related to long term care homes, senior residences, and other care facilities. She also says, while the virus is affecting the elderly particularly hard, infections in people under 40 make up 10% of the number of hospitalizations, and at least 1 death.
Indigenous Services Minister Mark Miller says the federal government is taking steps to help protect Canada’s Indigenous people. One area is to ensure at-risk youth get the services they need. He says, for the next six months, at a minimum, they will continue to cover the eligible costs for First Nations child and family services to youth who would have otherwise have aged out of care. Miller says some provinces have already undertaken this action and he suggests other provinces to do the same.
