With the recent snow, it may not seem like spring is on the way but it is coming and the Saskatoon Fire Department is reminding everyone about safety around the river and at storm water retention ponds.
Now that the freeze-thaw cycle has begun, the ice is no longer suitable for recreational use on the ponds.
Assistant Chief Wayne Rodger says ice on the South Saskatchewan River has also started to melt, although it is never safe for winter recreational use, and the public is being urged to never venture out on it.
Roger also reminds everyone to keep a close eye on children and pets when visiting trails, parks, or off-leash areas that may run adjacent to the river or a storm water retention pond.
