The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations, and the Chief and Council of the Montreal Lake Cree Nation, are calling on the province to close all liquor sales as a precautionary pandemic measure. Chief Frank Roberts believes no one in the province should have access to liquor because of an increase in house parties on his First Nation. His concern is that people at these parties are not practicing social distancing, contributing to the spread of COVID-19. Roberts says, since bars and night clubs have been shut down, bootleggers have ramped up sales on reserve. Premier Scott Moe has already explained that the province is concerned about people going into withdrawal if their access to liquor was suddenly shut off.
