The Greystone Singers had their year-end concert cancelled due to COVID-19, but that didn’t stop them from performing together, virtually.
The choir features an auditioned group of students from different areas of the University of Saskatchewan. Members of the choir recently recorded videos of themselves singing in isolation and those recordings were blended to a live performance the choir of 40 sang back in November.
USask Music Professor and Greystone Singers director Dr. Jennifer Lang, says it was the opportunity to remind students of their accomplishments throughout the year and that music making is about the journey and learning process, which can’t be taken away from them. Dr. Lang says the experience of coming together to rehearse and perform isn’t one that can be replicated, saying the video highlights community in a meaningful way, using resources in their own homes.
Dr. Lang says the song is about solidarity, that we are strong and purposeful on our own but even greater when we come together as a community.
