Diabetes Canada says they have a donation bin crisis. But perhaps not how you would think. The pick up of donations by Diabetes Canada from homes and donation bins across Canada came to a stop on March 23rd due to the physical distancing orders from government in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Diabetes Canada says it also resulted in the layoff of more than 500 staff who manage the donation bin service in the country.
The charity says the bins can’t be emptied but drop-offs are still continuing and in some cases turning the drop off area into a garbage dump.
Those charitable clothing donations are a crucial source of revenue supporting diabetes research, sending children with type 1 diabetes to camp and diverting more than 100 million pounds of textiles from Canadian landfills.
But until they are given the green light to start picking up again, they need the public to not drop anything at the donation bins.
