The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations says a case of COVID-19 was confirmed in one of Saskatchewan’s most isolated communities on Saturday.
The FSIN are demanding the provincial government and Saskatchewan Health Authority put better measures in place for health care staff, serving First Nations, and supply communities with more personal protective equipment for front-line health staff. Fond du Lac First Nation Chief Louie Mercedi suggests provincial health care employees are also not abiding by pandemic safety measures, claiming a nurse maybe responsible for the latest case. He claims the infection was caused by health care staff not being tested before coming to the nations.
FSIN Vice Chief David Pratt, says this is the reason they have been demanding that medical training facilities and educational opportunities be offered in First Nations communities for years, saying First Nations need to train students to become nurses and doctors within their own communities.
FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron, once again called on Premier Scott Moe and the Saskatchewan Health Authority to welcome the FSIN to the table, to come up with ways of working to fight this pandemic together.
