The number of Americans and Canadians crossing the border by automobile fell drastically in the second half of March as the COVID-19 Pandemic is starting to show up in Statistics Canada numbers. In March, the number of Americans entering by vehicle declined nearly 60 per cent when compared to the same month a year ago. Over the same period, the number of Canadians returning from the U.S. fell 45 per cent. Much the same story played out for international arrivals by air. Counting people arriving at nine large airports with electronic Primary Inspection Kiosks, or PIK, the number of travelers from abroad fell 61 per cent in March compared to a year ago. The number of Canadian residents returning fell 32 per cent. The numbers exclude Toronto Pearson International Airport Terminal 1 where PIK is not fully deployed and Calgary International Airport where PIK wasn’t yet available at the time.
