Calling it the “digital divide” Saskatchewan’s opposition NDP says it has proven difficult for some students in the province who don’t have access to devices or other technologies for online learning resources to try and keep schooling at home.
Shannon Chappell, a single mom of 3 school-aged children in Saskatoon, only has one cell phone at home between the 4 of them.
She says they’ve had to find other sources so her kids can continue learning and gone to local retail outlets get grade level, do-it-yourself booklets. NDP education critic Carla Beck is urging the provincial government to find a technology equity plan with school divisions and teachers for Saskatchewan students.
Education critic Carla Becks uggested the government could make assurances around possible audits of school divisions loaning out devices in the event they devices aren’t returned. She also suggests collecting donated devices for families in need. (CKRM April 21/20)
