It’s as simple as making connections to ease the feelings of loneliness.
Social isolation has taken centre stage amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, but it’s not a new issue.
That’s where the Saskatchewan Red Cross Friendly Phone program comes in.
Coordinator, Shawn Green, says they have been offering this option to seniors and those with mobility issues for about 3 years now.
Some of the seniors don’t have any family nearby, some have mobility issues.
Most live in their own homes, Green says, but some also live in long term care facilities.
Volunteers are paired with someone who feels they could benefit from weekly phone calls.
During the pandemic though, more frequent phone calls are happening and volunteers are asking additional questions to ensure seniors have the medications and groceries they need.
Green says offering a friendly voice and connecting seniors with possible resources, for instance finding out if their local grocery store offers delivery, can make a huge difference in someone’s life.
The phone calls may be shorter to begin with, but as the two connect, it becomes more of a friendship.
