Word is that one of the stores in La Loche had to close down from COVID-19. A Go-Fund-Me page has been created by the Saskatchewan Medical Association, Student Medical Society of Saskatchewan, and the Town of La Loche. Their goal is $15,000 that will be put towards the purchase of supplies including home activities, personal hygiene, and sewing supplies. According to the Go-Fund-Me page a transport tuck is scheduled to leave for La Loche from Saskatoon at the end of next week. As Friday at 11 a.m. more than $9,000 had been raised.
On the Town of La Loche Facebook page an update was posted from community leaders and medical health provincials. Northern Medical Health Officer Doctor Rim Zayed said the reason there was such a spread of COVID-19 is people drinking together, sharing cigarettes, driving together and she says it is mostly young people who know they have low risk factors but notes it is very harmful to others who are vulnerable. She also mentioned that the community medical representatives and leaders are working on rolling out an alcohol support program in addition to going door to door to check symptoms and conduct testing.
As of Friday’s COVID-19 update from the province 148 of 203 active cases in the province are in the far north, mostly concentrated in the La Loche area and 38 are the North region. That means more than 90% of active cases are in the North and Far North.
