There is a birthday celebration tonight (wed) on the Whitecap Dakota First Nation. Residents there will be marking the 90th birthday of elder Willis Royal. The celebration has to take a different approach due to COVID-19 physical distancing so, there will be a vehicle parade going past his house this evening. Royal is a military veteran having enlisted with the Regina Rifles before being transferred to the Winnipeg Rifles. He officially joined the forces in August of 1950 and was stationed in Hanover, Germany that same year, during the Allied Occupation. He eventually returned to Canada and was posted to Calgary with the 1st Battalion Queen’s Own Rifles and then discharged in 1954. Tonight’s celebration is for community members and invited guests only.
